At annual meetings and during the year, committees are a way of building networks and exchanging information and professional expertise.
Members are encouraged to participate and join committees, without which CBHL would not be as strong and enriching.

Annual Award for a Significant Work in Botanical or Horticultural Literature Committee
Since 2000, CBHL is giving an annual award to both the author and publisher of a work that makes a significant contribution to the literature of botany or horticulture. The award is presented at the Annual Meeting. Its purpose is to recognize a work that makes a significant contribution to the literature of botany or horticulture, increase the visibility of CBHL, and encourage participation by the CBHL community in recognizing significant contributions to the literature of the field. Charles Robert Long Award Committee
The Charles Robert Long Award Committee consists of five voting members: current President and Secretary plus three appointed members, all past officers of CBHL. Term of office for appointed members is five years. Any vacancy to be filled by the President in the year the vacancy occurs. The committee elects a chair annually from among the three appointed members. The committee chooses award recipients who have shown outstanding dedication to CBHL and have made major contributions in the field of botanical or horticultural literature and information service and research. Communications Committee
The Communications Committee shall oversee all publications, printed or digital, publicity, social media, press releases, member-to-member communication (currently email listserv), intranet, public website, and any other channel or platform desired for communication. Committee members will include a chair, selected by the committee, intranet manager, website manager, listserv manager, public relations manager, newsletter editor, and no fewer than three other members-at large. Financial Advisory Committee
An audit of the records of the CBHL treasury is conducted each year by this committee. Records maintained by the Treasurer are submitted for examination. Includes the Treasurer and at least two additional members appointed by the President at or immediately following the annual meeting. The committee selects its own chair, someone other than the Treasurer, annually. A report is made to the Board and subsequently to the membership at the Annual Meeting, and a summary is published in the Newsletter.
Founders’ Fund Travel Fellowship Award Committee
The Travel Fellowship was established in 1991 by CBHL with an initial grant from Virginia Gardner, of VLT Gardner Botanical Books. It was created as a memorial honoring past members. Income from memorial gifts is granted to four applicants each year who request assistance to attend the annual meeting. Persons interested in contributing memorial or other donations to the fund may contact the CBHL treasurer. Application details are announced via the electronic list few months before the annual meeting.
Membership Committee
This committee’s mission is to explore ways to monitor and enhance CBHL’s membership campaign, and to welcome new members. The committee is considering the development of an information packet, as well as other ways to orient new members. The membership manager is a designated member of this committee.
Nominating Committee
The chair is the immediate Past President of CBHL, and at least two additional members are appointed by the President. The committee selects nominee(s) for Vice-president of CBHL, or any other officer position needing to be filled, for election by members’ ballot before the Annual Meeting. The person elected as Vice-President makes a commitment to serve on the Board of Directors for three years: as Vice-President, President, and, Past President. Other positions on the Board are also filled by election as needed. Election is held annually.
Preservation and Access Committee
This committee (formerly named (1) the Documentation Strategy Committee and then (2) the Resources Assessment for Preservation and Access Committee -RAPAC) is developing projects to identify botanical and horticultural collections and information resources that should be preserved for the future. Current activities include a CBHL member survey on non-book holdings in member libraries. A symposium was also held on preservation at the XVI International Botanical Congress in August 1999.
Steering Committee
This committee was formed at the Albuquerque meeting in 1999, under the name of Committee on Committees, in order to facilitate intercommittee communication. A current charge is to provide input on committee structure and operations to the Strategic Planning Committee. This committee’s charge is to identify and facilitate ways to exchange resources. It includes the board of directors, the chairs of committtees and all managers of services or publications.
